Opportunity Brief: Regional EHS Manager

We have been appointed on the search for a Regional EHS Manager who will be pivotal in driving global safety for the business.

Below you will find an ‘opportunity brief’ developed from notes taken during the scoping meeting (Situational Discovery) held between the Research Manager of F&S Executive Search, Senior Associate of F&S Executive Search, the Client Company HRD and the VP of EHS. The brief is designed to give candidates a deeper insight into the opportunity inherent within the role, the challenges the role presents and provide access to the detail that sits behind the job specification.

Client Opportunity Statement:

“Our business is in the process of rolling out a new safety strategy that will see us further unify our safety practices across all sites in the business. It is imperative that we hire an experienced, passionate and pragmatic safety professional to take a personal lead of this new strategy across our European and North African sites.”

“Ultimately, we are looking for a hands-on safety professional who will take the lead on the rolling out our strategy across the globe. Essentially, you will be working shoulder to shoulder with the team whilst upskilling, mentoring and educating our colleagues. Whilst we have a good culture across safety it’s important to note that there are differences in expected standards across the globe and it’s vital that we set a consistent expectation to minimise serious incidents.”

“Whilst this strategy will add significant value to the function we are expecting the rollout to be particularly complex due to the different geographical regions and as such we need an individual who can think strategically alongside their hands-on work – It’s going to be tough but worth it!”

The Opportunity

Main challenges that will be encountered in the 1st year:

  • The business is commencing the rollout of a new global corporate safety strategy. Whilst this strategy will allow for improved performance across the globe around serious incidents, we are expecting the rollout of the strategy to be particularly complex due to the different geographical regions and current safety performances involved.
  • You will be required to build an understanding of EHS regulations across 9 different countries and regions. This will include varied attitudes in relation to health and safety and pose challenges around the education of colleagues.
  • Whilst most of your travel will be across the UK it is still important to ensure site presence across the European and North African sites, it will be integral to promote safety champions across the smaller sites to drive change.

Key deliverables within the 1st year:

  • Implementation of new global safety strategy across all sites, training senior members of the business through to shop floor.
  • Implementation of certified hands-free working areas across all sites.
  • Keeping sites certified to country and international regulations, overseeing reporting, electronic management system and the collation of reports.

Agreed on Hard Skills for candidates to secure an interview:

  • Professional certification desirable (Qualification type dependant on nationality) – Ideally NEBOSH Diploma qualified / working towards or Level 6 Equivalent.
  • Degree educated: Engineering, environment, science, chemical related subject (Desirable).
  • Varied experience of EHS and up-to-date knowledge of regulations in home location and other countries, such as Europe and North Africa.
  • CMIOSH or working/willing work towards if UK candidate.
  • Rail industry background is preferred however we are open to candidates from high integrity / safety-critical industries.
  • Capable of building strong relationships across the business (shop floor to boardroom) to ensure collaboration between departments, stakeholder management and empowerment of the workforce.
  • Able to operate in a hands-on fashion and be present across sites.
  • Track record of promoting and empowering ‘safety champions’ across sites.

  • Genuine and authentic individual that is personable and able to support people buying into Health and Safety and empowering a workforce.
  • Hybrid working is offered, but it is expected that the Regional EHS Manager will have a regular site presence to lead and manage the team, with some travel required.
  • A strong motivator of people who can work with autonomy, able to set a culture, and foster a strong working environment.

Working Arrangements & Location:

Hybrid working available. Preference for UK base due to 9 locations in-country but will consider other European country locations. Full travel insurance is provided.

Ford & Stanley Interview Process:

  • 1st Stage – Formal Interview. Candidates are assessed on their suitability for the job in the context of the above and challenged on how the opportunity lines up with their career aspirations.
  • 2nd Stage – The ‘shortlist’. Candidates are asked to reflect on 1st stage, providing evidence and discussion on key points. Package requirements are reiterated and finalised.

Client Company Interview Process:

  • 1st Stage interview to be held ideally face to face with the Group HRD and VP of EHS.
  • 2nd Stage interview will be face-to-face with the senior leadership panel (to be confirmed based on location of candidate).

Good to know:

  • The company comprises of 2 businesses spread across 15 sites in UK, Europe, Africa & Middle East. (1 x Belgium, 2 x Germany, 1 x Italy, 1 x Egypt, 1 x Saudi, 9 x UK) with approximately 1,100 staff, mainly operating in blue-collar, heavy engineering environments.
  • This position has become available due to the current post holder moving into a more operational role within the business.
  • With an already good safety culture, the business is currently going through a global safety refresh, to ensure the prevention of serious incidents and fatalities. This will include safety training rollout across all sites.
  • Travel required to different company sites within UK, (40-55% of the time).
  • Some sites have a dedicated health and safety resource whilst some of the smaller sites this is performed by a manager within the team. We are looking to empower safety champions across all sites to assist driving safety on a daily basis.
  • There are 2 EHS Manager in the UK that are established in EHS.
  • There is a significant level of variation between attitudes towards H&S across the different countries and the individual needs to be familiar with this from both a legal and behavioural standpoint.
  • The role has been covered for the last 18 months by the HSE Manager in Italy and it is important to note he has had good success in the role.
  • The business want an HSE professional who can provide corporate-level leadership for H&S in the EMEA region.
  • Preference for UK base due to 9 locations in country but will consider other European country locations. Full travel insurance is provided.
  • Dotted line into 3 senior leaders of the business.
  • Frequent work on customer property so at times will be a challenge to implement EHS in the correct manner. In some cases, working to a higher level of Health and Safety than the customers own employees.
  • Serve as main point of contact for environmental and safety compliance issues within assigned manufacturing organisations.
  • Documentation, reporting, and root cause analysis of spills, chemical releases and safety incidents
  • Assist in the development and implementation of policies and directives for all facilities.
  • Provide professional guidance, assistance and training to facility EHS coordinators.
  • Provide ISO management system (14001, 45001, 9001) audit assistance and management.
  • Coordinate preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual reporting requirements for assigned operations and programs.
  • Serve as primary contact and liaison with regulatory agencies for assigned facilities.

Budget & Benefits:

Low £80k/ Mid £85k/ Top end £89k per annum
